Towards zero…

The thaw process for the whisky crate and its contents involves slowly and carefully bringing the crate from -20°C to close to 0°C in its current freezer. It will then be transferred to the purpose built cool room where Lizzie Meek (Programme Manager – Artefacts, Antarctic Heritage Trust) and Sasha Stollman (Conservator, Canterbury Museum) will examine and conserve the crate (and anything it contains!). The cool room has been constructed in the Visitor Lounge at Canterbury Museum and a triple-glazed window will allow the public to watch Lizzie and Sasha at work.

The temperature of the freezer is being raised by 2°C each day.  To calibrate the unit, Brent Bird from Coolfridge comes in every day and uses a digital thermometer to check the temperature of a container of oil  in the bottom of the freezer.
